RIDE RIGHT to Avoid Collisions

Riding motorcycles off-road is dangerous. Even if you're a great rider and adhere to common safety rules, things can go wrong when you share a road with other riders. To bring attention to the inherent risk of mototrcycle travel in the left lane, and promote safe riding on trails, BDR is launching the Ride Right Initiative to remind riders to always STAYon the RIGHT side of the road to avoid head-on collisions.

NMBDR Sec 7: Now Open!

We have reports from riders that Section 7 of the NMBDR is now completely open. There are a few snow patches above 9,800 ft, but they do have trails through them and should be melted in a week.

We have been informed both gas stations in Antonito, CO the ending point of the NMBDR have no gas. Both gas stations have shut down and you will have to travel 15 miles north to La Jara for fuel.

NVBDR: TEMPORARY Re-Route of NVBDR Sec 1 for Mint 400

A temporary re-route in Section 1 of the NVBDR has been scheduled for March 2-4th. The Mint 400 Off-Road Race will be using a section of road in which the NVBDR travels on as well. This section is just north of Nipton and ends in Primm and is part of our track NVSec1 Oatman to Pahrump. Re-route available.

A portion of Section 3 of the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route will be closed for the entire 2017 summer riding season. Cottonwood Pass which travels over the Continental Divide from Taylor Park on the west to Buena Vista on the east, will be closed this summer (2017). The pass is dirt on the west side and paved on the east. Detour available.

We received a report that Road 233 ("the Jungle") in Section 4 of WABDR is in bad condition. Looks like a lot of blowdown and vegetation, as well as recent fire damage. The bypass is easy on Forest Road 8410 (the main route down the mountain to Lake Chelan).

WABDR Section 5 Road Damage

Section 5 of the WABDR has sustained damage and has several sections of washed out road. There are trees and debris in the roadway as well. All are passable with extra effort and some advanced riding skills.

AZBDR Fires in Section 4

There is another fire impacting the Northern part of the AZBDR (Section 4). The section that runs from Highway 87, 211 then on 80 up to Long Lake is now the border of the burn. The incident commander on June 9 said that although the roads are open, they will be back burning right to the edge of the road. In addition, there are significant crews and trucks on the road and the smoke will be getting very heavy.

AZBDR Road Closure Due to Fire in Section 3

Due to the Juniper fire, state route 288 (Young Hwy) and forest road 203 (Cherry Creek Rd) are closed at this time. This means you will have to travel from Globe on Hwy 188 to Hwy 87 and go to Payson. Then take Hwy 260 to the top of the Mogollion Rim where you will pick the route back up on FS 300.

NMBDR Update - Road Closure Section 7

The Alternate Expert track NM7ALT section is closed for some unknown reason at this time. This would be FS 23 and FS137 between Abiquiu and El Rito. The normal route NM7 Cuba to End is still open from Abiquiu to El Rito. However, reports are that the snow level north of El Rito is too heavy and the route is closed from El Rito north.

BDR Announces Nevada as the Next BDR State

AZBDR Sec 4 Route Update

Over the past two years there has been significant rain and flooding in the Arizona area. There is a section of road in Section 4 that was slightly rutted in the past but now has become heavily rutted. When traveling using Track AZ4 Mammoth to Globe you turn off of Hwy 77 onto Dripping Springs Road. The rutting doesn't happen until you go about 10 miles up Dripping Springs and Forest Rd 112.

The Washington State Parks is considering returning the Eastern Section of the John Wayne Pioneer trail east of the Columbia River to the adjacent land owners. Meetings to determine the future of the trail are held in the next two weeks. Advocate to keep the trail open by contacting the State Parks and asking them to keep ownership of the trail.

WABDR Road Closure in Section 5 - Road #4150

Last year's forest fires in the Okanogan National Forest area have lead to erosion and some road damage affecting road #4150 just past Benson Creek road (heading north out of Carlton to Conconully). The road will remain closed until damage is assessed and repairs are made. The ride-around is easy - just take Highway 153 and Highway 20 around it. Refer to your WABDR Butler Map for this simple bypass.

One of our favorite motorcycle events of the summer is almost here. The 2014 Touratech Rally will take place Thursday, June 26th through Sunday, June 29th in Plain, WA. This year's rally will be held in conjunction with the Washington Overland Rally and will include camping, classes, GPS tracks, guided rides and entertaining guest speakers. The crew at Backcountry Discovery Routes is at it again. We are currenty working on our fifth BDR, a south-to-north route across the state of Idaho that will be the longest BDR to date. The final route will be well over 1,000 miles of mostly non-paved track, beginning in the old western town of Jarbidge Nevada, meandering through the west side of the Idaho Rocky Mountains on the way to the Canadian Border at the Idaho Panhandle. The release of the IDBDR movie, Butler Map and free GPS tracks is scheduled for January 2015.

AZBDR Road Closure in Section 8

There is a road closure due to a road construction and culvert replacement in Section 8 (mis-labeled section 9 on the back of AZBDR Map) just east of FS 139A and when you turn onto FS 95. To get around this construction, don't turn onto FS 139A and just continue on FS 139. FS 139 will go north and reconnect with the route on FS95. At this time the Forest Service has no idea when this construction will be complete.
