New Tracks available for download
An updated version of the GPS tracks are now available for download, labeled SteensAlvord BDRX-September2023.gpx.
- This new version includes some critical updates to the route, including:
- The original portion of section 2 on the Stonehouse Road has been removed due to private land restrictions. Please do not travel on this original section; the previous bypass is now the main route.
- Due to the gated rockfall closure on Steens Mountain Rd, which is expected to last through the rest of this year, we have modified the tracks to bypass this portion by going into Frenchglen, then up the other side. You can still access the summit and overlook areas via the track labeled SteensAlvordBDRX1 – BONUS – Steens Summit .

Important Notice: Closure on Steens Mountain Loop Road – Section 1
A rockslide has caused a gated closure on Section 1 of the route for repairs. This closure is expected to last until Spring, 2024 so we have updated the .gpx tracks accordingly:
- Riders must continue to Frenchglen, then continue on Steens Mountain Loop Rd heading East.
- You can still access the summit and various overlooks from this point before taking Moon Hill Rd to continue on the main route.

- Please, Ride Respectfully and never go around closed gates or you risk us all losing access completely.

Important Notice:
There are a few important notes regarding the Steens/Alvord BDR-X Tracks:
- New GPS tracks have been published titled: SteensAlvord BDRX-August2023
- This updated route includes one seasonal bypass track on the Stonehouse section. This bypass track must be used prior to August 1st. There are no gates for the Stonehouse area, please pay special attention to the tracks as you ride and never venture off the tracks.
- The Steens Mountain Loop Road is usually open by mid-June but sometimes opens later during heavier snow pack years. The lower roads and campgrounds often are open by the start of June. To find out the status of campgrounds and roads, call the Burns District office at 541-573-4400 and check ODOT Trip Check.
