A recently introduced bill (H.R. 1864) is in the first stages of the legislative process, and if succeeds will more than double the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funding to at least $250 million.
We can help move this bill forward by asking our federal representatives to support this legislation.
Go to https://arra-access.com/action/ and simply fill out a pre-made form to urge your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 1864, The Recreational Trails Full Funding Act of 2021.
This legislation is critical for the continued development and maintenance of trails across the country for all (non-motorized and motorized) recreational users.
From motorcycles to mountain bikes, snowmobilers to cross country skiers, hikers to horseback riders, and handicapped accessible trails and facilities, RTP funds are used to design, construct and maintain our local trails.
The program is modeled after the Highway Trust Fund and is funded through taxes paid on gasoline used to fuel snowmobiles, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles that do not use highways. The program is currently funded at $84 million annually, which is substantially less than is collected in taxes on fuel used by these vehicles.
