Michigan Backcountry Discovery Route

The Michigan BDR is a 1000-mile long route that runs south to north and includes the western end of the Upper Peninsula. The route starts at the southern Michigan border, passes east of Grand Rapids, and then heads into the Manistee National Forest. Before reaching the Mackinac Bridge the route finds the shore of Lake Michigan in several places. It ends with epic views of Lake Superior and a visit to a historic lighthouse with a tower you can ascend. You’ll pass countless picturesque lakes and meander through lush river valleys between the friendly small towns where you stop to refuel. Full size adventure motorcycles remain the optimal tool for the MIBDR because the amount of typical deep Michigan sand has been minimized.
