Before You Ride: Important Reminders
Throughout the riding season, changing conditions are part of every BDR adventure.
Plan ahead, ride respectfully, and follow the BDR Tenets of Responsible Travel to help ensure a safe trip while respecting local communities and protecting access for everyone.
- Download the latest GPS tracks before your trip. Printed maps and older tracks may not reflect recent route changes. The current GPS tracks are always considered the latest version of the route.
- Check Route Updates for seasonal closures and beware of fast-changing road conditions before you go. There may be lingering snow and impassible conditions in the early season and deep sand in the summer.
- Please respect all gates and closures. Never ride around them.
- Expect downed trees early in the season. Carry a folding saw if you have one, know the official bypasses, and be prepared to turn around and create your own bypass if conditions are unsafe.
- Monitor wildfire conditions. Use the BDR Interactive Map HERE to check the wildfire activity layer and tools like the onX Offroad wildfire and smoke layers to monitor changing conditions.
- Join your route’s official BDR Facebook group for current rider reports and local updates.
- Ride Right, Ride Respectfully, Yield to Animals and Know Your Limits
We often receive reports of riders speeding, not riding right, and blocking roadways in residential areas.
Please be courteous, respect local communities, and remember that adventuring in the backcountry is a privilege, not a right. Be an ambassador for our sport and help preserve access for future riders.
Doing a little homework before you leave and making good decisions on the trail helps ensure a safe trip while protecting the future of the BDRs for everyone.

Multiple Park Closures in Effect

Closures and Updates
The following weather-related road closures are in effect until futher notice:
- The paved road between Cottonwood Campground and Santa Elena Canyon
- Old Maverick Road
- Grapevine Hills Road
- Hot Springs Road
- Paint Gap Road
- River Road East and West
- Glenn Springs Road south of Pine Canyon Road
- Old Ore Road
- Lone Mountain Trailhead Road
- Black Gap Road is closed until further notice due to unsafe conditions from 2025 flash flooding events.

New Tracks Available for Download
A new version of the Big Bend TX BDR-X tracks is available labeled BDRX-Big-Bend-May2025.gpx
This update includes a few minor refinements and a few major updates:
SECTION 3:
- The previous route travelled from Study Butte to Presidio. The new Section 3 bypasses Presidio and heads north to Marfa.
- Fuel, Food, and Lodging are available in Presidio and riders should detour into town for gas if they intend to also ride the optional EXT track into the State Park.
- Section 3 is now 124 miles, but is over 170 miles if you also go into the State Park.
- Riders can get fuel in Lajitas, and must secure their State Park Permits in Lajitas or Presidio prior to entering the park.
SECTION 4:
- The previous route travelled from Presidio to Van Horn. The new Section 4 starts in Marfa and rides down beautiful Pinto Canyon to rejoin the previous segment on Chispa Rd.
- This section is 144 miles and there is NO FUEL available anywhere along this section. Carry extra fuel if your range is close to this.
- In inclement weather, Godzilla Hill is considered impassable and riders should return to Marfa.
SECTION 5:
- The previous route went south from Fort Davis to Marfa, then to Alpine. With the addition of Marfa as a section end, the updated route travels directly from Fort Davis to Alpine.

Section 3 – Terlingua Ranch Tracks Update
We’ve recently learned that certain roads within Terlingua Ranch lack public easements. As a result, we have removed the Terlingua Ranch portion from Section 3 of the route. We’re exploring potential alternatives, but for now, please respect the private property in this area and avoid riding this segment to help maintain positive relationships with local residents and landowners.
This map reflects the change, and the GPX tracks have been updated. Remember to download the latest route tracks before your trip.
