The New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Route offers some of the most remote, exciting, and varied terrain. It’s unique to all the others in more ways than one. The tour begins with some fantastic old highway pavement down south and transitions into the tall, forested area around Cloudcroft at an elevation of over 8,600 feet.

Be prepared for everything from dry sandy desert to lush green aspen forest at over 10,000 feet, you’ll see it all. Along the journey, you’ll see far more wildlife than traffic on the trail, pass through charming small towns, and enjoy some truly incredible New Mexican cuisine at each stop. Your accommodations each evening are top-notch, and soaking in the Ojo Caliente hot springs will leave you rested and ready for the final day.

Over the week you’ll drop in and out of the desert, constantly changing elevation, landscape, terrain, and scenery. The people you’ll meet, the history of the Spanish influence, farming and agriculture, and Native American culture, all make this a true adventure into the unknown.
